Working men’s clubs are in gradual decline, and are sadly disappearing in today’s society. These private social clubs have been around since the 19th century and have played a substantial part in welsh traditions. They were once thriving hubs for working class communities, places for industrial workers to relax, socialise, have a drink, and be entertained. There is a real sense of belonging within these clubs, and if they do eventually die out another fabric of Welsh valley life will go with them.

This work has been compiled from three different working men’s clubs, Abertysswg Working Men’s Club, Trallwn Workmen’s Club and Canton Liberal Workmen’s Club. Whilst acknowledging the decline of such institutions, the work also celebrates the community spirit to be found within them. It is this community spirit that is at threat as we move into the twenty-first century.

Many thanks to all the Working Men's Clubs and members.
